Powwow Weekend Schedule
A Pow Wow, for my people means a time of celebration, healing and spiritual growth. This is the place, the event, that brings together old friends and creates new ones, it also brings together many different First Nations as well as Nations from around the globe. It is the one place that you will truly see and hear all of the different types of song, dance, and language that make up the First Nations' community.
Pow Wow's are organized by committees that work for months before the events. The MC works with the Arena Director to keep the Pow Wow organized and running smoothly. These two individuals along with the committee work hard to bring the people together to dance ,in fellowship, together in the circle.
The Pow Wow begins by the Grand Entry. This is the entry of all the people entering the arena. During this, everyone is asked to stand as the flags are brought into the arena. The flags carried generally include the US flag, Canadian flag, Tribal Flags, and eagle staffs of various tribes present. Veterans usually carry these.
Following the veterans are other important guests of the Pow Wow including tribal chiefs, Princesses, Elders, and Pow Wow organizers. Next in line are the men dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena, the song ends and a song is sung to honor the flag and the veterans. After a prayer, the dancing resumes usually with a few Round Dancers, Intertribal songs are sung and everyone dances to the beat of the drum.
Our Pow Wow began in 1986 as a social, in 1989 it obtained full Pow Wow status. Each year the amount of guests and spectators continues to grow, everyone is welcomed to attend.
This is a traditional Pow Wow held in keeping with the spirit of generosity and acceptance of all people and in keeping with the policies set by the committee for good order. Pow Wow rules will be enforced.
Regulations
- Due to the fact that this is a traditional Pow Wow and also because of the fact that the event is held on school grounds, we ask that all persons refrain from carrying or consuming alcohol or drugs on the Pow Wow grounds.
- Pets are not allowed on pow wow grounds.
- The security team will be on patrol to enforce this rule.
- We ask that all garbage be placed in the designated garbage containers.
- Children should, at all times, be accompanied by an adult to avoid the possibility of getting lost.
- Above all we ask that you treat all others with respect.
Security
Each year the Pow Wow committee has a security staff on duty around the clock. They are seconded by the Kitigan Zibi Police Department (K.Z.P.D.), especially during the evening hours.
We also have a first aid tent: Kitigan Zibi Health and Social Services (K.Z.H.S.S) provides this service. In addition to this, Haute Gatineau Regional Ambulance Services is on standby (luckily we have never needed their services).
